The man had morphed from sophisticated businessman into rugged explorer with the unmatched confidence of an adventurer. He’d commanded troops in the toughest environments.

I had never felt safer.

We’d been offered a suite by the concierge, but Henry had declined, preferring a more modest room. Considering he could have bought the hotel if he wanted, I admired him for that.

He threw his rucksack on the floor by the king-size bed. “We’ll head out first thing.”

“Great.”

“Will the room do?” He arched a brow.

“Of course.”

“You’re used to the finer things.”

I frowned at him. “I’m the daughter of a maid, Henry.”

He stood there staring at me for the longest time. “I didn’t know that.”

“Well, now you do. My mother cleaned houses like yours.”

“She’s not with us anymore?”

“No.”

“I’m sorry,” he said thoughtfully.

Another good reason for us not to date, I mused cheerfully.

“Reese’s father owned a Greek restaurant.” He folded his arms. “I’m not the snob you believe I am.”

“Yes, you are.”

“Okay, I am.” He relented with a nod. “Try not to clean anything here. We don’t have time.”

“Cheeky bastard.”

“Are you like her?”

“Mom?” I lowered my guard. “Yes.”

“She was beautiful, then.”

“Good save.”

“I meant it.”

“Right,” I said, hoping he would change the subject.

“Where in Florida did you grow up?”

“I was born in Miami, but grew up in the Keys.”

“I need to visit there. Maybe you can take me one day.”

I appreciated his polite reply. “My childhood was idyllic—even without a dad. Fishing on the weekends. Endless trips to the beach. Every day felt special to me.”

“No father?”
