“He left us when I was six.”
“I’m sorry.”
“We were both relieved,” I said. “He beat Mom up a few times. I was too young to do much about it. Eventually, we moved from Miami to the Keys and started a new life.”
“Your mom ever remarry?”
“No, she was over men at that point.”
“Is that why you became a dominatrix? To maintain some semblance of control?”
“You sound like your brother.”
He studied me carefully. “You’re ready for a change in career?”
“Cameron invited me to join his Beverly Hills clinic.”
Henry seemed impressed “He still consults there from time to time.”
“It will be a good fit for me.”
“You mentioned having doubts?”
“It means giving up being a dominatrix. It’s who I am. My whole life has been built around my alter ego.”
“You’ll miss the excitement?”
“I know I will.”
“I envy you,” he said, sighing.
“Why?”
“My destiny has been set since birth.”
“From what I hear, you’re a fabulous CEO.”
“Cameron is biased.”
“He would do anything for you.”
“I’ve fucked up in more ways than I can count with him.” He waved that off. “I have to be honest with you about something.”
“Sure.”
“Ever since I’ve met you, I’ve tried to fathom why you’re not married. You’re so damn gorgeous.”
“Thank you.”
“You turn heads wherever we go.”
“My last relationship became strained. I need to stay away from men for a bit.”
“I hope he didn’t ruin you for the rest of us,” he said. “For other men, I mean.”
That made me giggle.
“He was an orthopedic surgeon,” I said. “Alcoholism is not uncommon in that profession.”
