“You’re capable of going alone. But why can’t you see the benefit of me going with you for support?”

She fell silent.

“At least you left your suitcase behind,” I jabbed. “Are you sure you’re fit enough to carry your kit?”

“Are you?” She glanced over. “You’ve been living the high life since you left the military.”

I glanced at her. “The occasional yoga class hasn’t prepared you for this kind of endurance test.”

“Occasional yoga?”

“How else do you achieve your hot body?”

She folded her arms across her chest, appearing quietly amused.

“Not P.C. enough?” I said. “You haven’t heard my full repertoire. Settle in, the show’s about to start.”

“How about we just get this experience over with?”

“Cameron put you up to this. I bet part of your bargain is to report back to him.”

“Not true.”

“I need total transparency.”

“I may send a text to keep him updated.”

“Until we have no Internet.”

“He told me you’ll have SATCOM.”

My wristwatch was reliant on a satellite. I’d have to show her how to use it later if anything happened to me.

A sudden crack of thunder startled us both.

Rain pelted the windshield, a deluge of water blurring the view. It was as though the sky had opened and dumped an entire cloud.

“It will pass quickly,” she said.

With the windshield wipers on maximum, I could just about see the road ahead. The other cars were also slowing to accommodate the low visibility.

My gut wrenched at having to slow down.

I was committed now—a tenuous connection was flowing between me and Reese.

Maybe she’d be disheartened that I’d not dropped everything the moment I’d received word she might be alive. Maybe she thought I wasn’t coming at all.

My heart squeezed at the thought of finally seeing her again.

A thousand questions crowded my mind.

“See, the rain is lifting,” said Lotte, bringing my focus back to her.

This growing affection for my sidekick felt refreshing. The isolation I’d become accustomed to was now lifting.

I wasn’t going to share that with her though.

“Tell me you packed for this,” I bit out.
