I hated being unable to read him. “If Aemon finds out it would be devastating for us.”

“I mean, it might.”

“Depends on what you tell him.”

“He can’t know. Don’t call anyone.”

“What are you looking for?”

“I need to persuade you not to accept his offer.”

“This doesn’t help your cause.”

I stepped closer to the clock until my knees met the end of the bed. “You’ve seen how he operates.”

“I’m more interested in howyouoperate.”

“I was going to leave you a note.”

“After exploring.” His tone had changed.

“Your home is lovely.” I smiled, hoping to ease the tension.

“Breaking and entering is illegal.”

“I mean well.”

“Explain, then.”

I looked away, fearing I’d made a mistake.

Inhaling sharply, I said, “What happened to Ben—I feel terrible.”

“He was helping you with something. What was it?”

That startled me. “Why?”

“Was he helping you escape?”

I thought quickly, fearing this conversation might be recorded. “No.”

“You’re going to have to do better.”

“I’ll tell you in person.”

“Now.”

“Aemon can never know I was here,” I pleaded. “You’ve seen how he can be.”

“Brutal?”

I hesitated. “Yes.”
