“Why spoil their fun?” chided Aemon.

“If it’s fun you want…” He gave a nod to the new submissives.

Jewel stomped her foot. “That’s enough.”

The Dominatrices ceased their self-pleasuring.

“You’ve made your point,” said Jewel. “Why are you here?”

“To further our discussion.” Atticus turned to Aemon.

Jewel prickled and it looked a lot like jealousy.

“Talk,” Aemon snapped.

Atticus shrugged. “Intricate rituals are what your members enjoy. How about a vote?”

A rumble of disquiet filled the great hall.

Aemon raised his hand in the air. “Please give us a few minutes to resolve this.”

The crowd dispersed, leaving the vast chamber empty. It seemed to take forever, and no one had the patience for it.

I stayed back, observing them from behind a pillar with my heart pounding and perspiration on my lip.

Atticus turned to look at me.

Our eyes locked.

A multitude of emotions were conveyed between us.

I didn’t recognize the man behind the mask. His eyes were cold and cruel, completely unlike the gentleman who’d taken me passionately. That promise that he would make my life better had been a wild fantasy.

“Eve,” said Aemon. “Out, please.”

A shiver of uncertainty raced up my spine, and I became lightheaded, worried that I couldn’t do anything without angering Aemon.

Atticus’ familiar grin found me, somehow surpassing arrogance.

A look of love, perhaps.

Or was I seeing what I wanted to see?

I walked toward the dais. “Please, let him go.”

Aemon leaned forward on his elbows. “Why should we?”

“His friends will know he’s here.” I rested my palm on my chest to emphasize sincerity.

I needed to remind them that there could be consequences we’d not considered.

“Actually,” said Atticus. “No one knows I’m here.”

I glared at him; furious he’d not grabbed this chance.

Aemon’s eyes widened with intrigue. He studied me and then refocused on Atticus again.

“This is kinda private,” said Atticus. “If you don’t mind.”
