“You’ve given up on owning this place?” asked Aemon.

I ignored the question. “I’m here to propose a treaty.”

“What do you want?”

“Bring me onto the Board instead of giving it to Rylee or Lance.”

“And why would we do that?” asked Jewel.

“I can provide the kind of showmanship others can’t compete with. A level of debauchery you cherish. I have the stomach for your darkest desires.”

“Betray your friends?” Aemon shook his head. “Are you sure?”

“I’ve risked my life by entering here,” I said. “That’s how sure I am you need me.”

“What’s in it for you?” said Jewel.

“The perks I get from a seat on the Board. Access to every area. Every chamber. Every despicable game.”

“What else?” said Aemon.

“To sweeten our deal,” I said, “I’ll killthedeal.”

“Some friend,” said Jewel.

“We all have that in common,” I jested.

That seemed to rile Jewel up.

“I’m listening.” Aemon gestured for me to go on.

I shrugged. “A man like me on your side is an asset. You must know that—because I’m still talking.”

Aemon stepped off the dais. “I suppose that’s true.”

“You know I’ll mix things up—show everyone what can be done if you just have the balls to pull it off.”

“I don’t like it,” Jewel muttered to Aemon.

Aemon looked impressed. “I think he’s made a reasonable case.”

After all, their major headache would be resolved, and they’d get me. “What’s not to like?” I said.

Aemon smirked. “What else?”

“Sixth floor membership.”

Jewel looked peeved and started to say something but thought better of it.

“Getting here and staying alive is the ultimate accomplishment,” I said. “I never wavered. Never blinked. I play hard and dirty and take the ultimate risks that are Pendulum’s brand.”

“I founded Pendulum when you were still a kid.”

“It was always waiting for me,” I said with an air of arrogance. “Let me prove that I can see your true vision realized.”

“We’d all be in prison,” he chided.

“Or nirvana.” I stepped toward him. “Depending on the way you see it.”
