I arched a brow. “Is this where you say you’ve never met The One?”

“Don’t believe in just one.”

“Tragic.”

“You haven’t met him either,” he said, his voice low. “Or you wouldn’t be flirting.”

That made me flinch. “I’m merely making polite conversation with a stranger.”

“Your motive is as transparent as your beauty. Enough to grab a man’s attention but only a fool would succumb.”

“That’s rude.”

“What’s rude is keeping access to the sixth floor from me.”

I looked surprised and then realized he knew nothing; it was merely a ruse to get me to react.

I needed to change the subject. “Maybe I will pose for you in that chair. Only you wouldn’t be allowed to touch.”

“He would never let you.”

“Which would make it all the more divine.”

He tutted. “You really are risqué.”

“And you, you’re no different to any of the men here.”

I wanted to believe otherwise.

These thoughts, these feelings, were insane, and I silently chastised myself for not walking away.

“The truth always comes out.”

“Maybe I’m trying to help you. Save you from the consequences of your ill-fated intentions.”

“Didn’t envision you’d resort to threats. Not classy at all—”

“You just want to own everyone. Because that’s whoyou are.”

“Is that why the others do it?”

“You’ve made a mistake coming here,” I said. “We won’t give up our rule.”

“You want to believe that because you’re power hungry. A trait that will destroy you, Eve. Tell me how to access your secret floor.”

“No.”

His eyes flashed with triumph. I’d confirmed his suspicion of its existence.

He asked gruffly, “You’re a submissive?”
