“Shay’s team are in Venice Beach.” Cameron looked up. “On the shore. They’re having A.J. brought to them.”
“That’s original,” I said, head throbbing.
“Jake’s there, too.” Cameron raised his gaze to meet mine.
I leaned forward and a sharp pinch of pain had me sitting back. “He promised Stella.”
Jake would have told her he’d do everything he could—including placing himself at the center of the fray.
Every second felt like a lifetime as we waited to hear if the rescue mission was successful. And no one was hurt.
“They’re the best there is,” Cameron said, reassuring us as though he knew what we were thinking.
“How does it work?” asked Greyson. “They set up a ruse?”
“Exactly,” replied Cameron, seemingly proud of his friends’ ingenuity.
Knowing Shay and Jake were in harm’s way made the waiting harder.
We remained hopeful, grateful to be together during this time.
“Update?” Greyson piped up.
Cameron gave a compassionate smile. “Shay will let us know.”
Greyson continued to pace, seemingly more nervous than us. Though we were still running off adrenaline.
Cameron pushed up. “Greyson, grab us some coffee, please.”
“There’s a vending machine around the corner,” I told him.
Greyson appeared grateful to have something to do. He left the chapel and went in search of drinks.
In front of the altar, Cameron stretched his arms and twisted his torso to relieve the tension of waiting. “How are you feeling?”
“Like I got beaten up,” I admitted.
The look he gave me revealed he was talking about Pendulum.
I stood up and joined him. “Nothing I can’t handle.”
“Want to talk about her?”
I flinched before I could help it.
It was only a matter of time before Cameron found a quiet moment alone with me to begin his interrogation.
“It’s impossible,” I reasoned.
“She’s married?”
I gave a nod.
“To an influential member at Pendulum?” He watched me carefully.
“Yes, the brains behind Pendulum.”
“Aemon Roper?”
