“You’ve heard of him?”

“My gift is my curse,” he said.

“Eve.” I shared her name with the only man I could.

“He purchased her as a teenager.” I caressed my brow to ease the tension. “She has a barcode on her wrist.”

His deep chestnut eyes reflected horror and then a certain resolution came over him—an understanding of why I’d be drawn to Eve.

“He’s sent their daughter abroad. To control her.”

“That’s the child Shay is searching for?”

“He told you?”

Cameron gave me an apologetic smile. “He keeps me updated.”

“Right.”

“Eve,” he repeated her name softly. “Taking her child away from her is as cruel as it gets.”

“That’s why she stays.”

“How old?”

“Six.” I touched my aching face.

“Richard tried to infiltrate Pendulum, but he never saw anything. We kept the place on our radar.”

“They knew to keep Richard out of certain chambers,” I reasoned. “Because of his association with Chrysalis.”

“Which was why we were grateful to pass the baton to you,”he said. “You, Jake and Greyson have what it takes to weed out the rotten parts.”

“We won’t give up until the women are free.”

Cameron looked thoughtful. “Let’s put more resources into reuniting Eve with her daughter.”

“Shay was doing a lot.”

“We need to bring in our U.K. friends.”

“I appreciate that.”

“Anyone can be found. It’s getting her out of the country that’ll be the problem. It could be construed as kidnapping.”

“Even though Eve’s her mother?”

“Roper would incite an international incident. You’d have the British and American embassies riding your ass.”

“I’ve had worse.”

“Trust me, you haven’t.” He reached over and patted my back gently. “We know the answer, Atti.”

“I hope you’re not suggesting…”

“Eve needs to gather all her documents. Birth certificate. Passports. Everything pertaining to the child.”

“I plan to go with her.”
