My heart sank. This would mean security would be tighter. The man himself would be at the location.

Shay confirmed my fears. “We don’t want to incite an international incident.”

“Is he there now?” Eve asked.

Shay looked at her with compassion in his eyes. “Our contact confirmed he’s at the house with Eloise Roper.”

“Don’t use his last name with hers,” she bit out.

He raised his hand in apology.

Perspiration spotted her brow. “Does he know we’re coming?”

He gauged her reaction. “He is her dad, right? She should be safe.”

“He’s kept her away from her mother,” I said.

“Aemon wanted me to follow him here,” she reasoned.

It made me wonder if he suspected there was something between us, even as careful as we’d been.

She caressed her temple. “How far away is it?”

Shay rubbed the back of his neck, looking tired. “According to the map, half an hour. This is my third time in this city. It all depends on traffic.”

He had skills that always managed to impress me. This guy was again proving why Cameron counted him as one of his closest friends.

“How can we thank you?” I asked him.

“This is what we do.”

Shay was an adrenaline junkie and he and his buddies no doubt missed their adventures as Navy SEALs. But this was pushing the limits of friendship. We were in a foreign land and the rules were different.

Shay checked his Apple watch. “Sorry, girlfriend’s checking in.”

“You should take that,” said Eve. “What’s her name?”

“Rue,” he said. “I’ll call her back.”

“Hotel, then?” I tried to hurry this along.

The heat was oppressive, causing my shirt to cling to my back. I wasn’t the only one stifled. The other guys had all clamored inside an air-conditioned vehicle, eager to get to their hotel.

Eve rallied her strength. “Please, take me to my daughter.”

“She’s not that far away,” he said. “A place called Sathorn.”

“Wait!” Eve grabbed my arm. “That’s where I grew up. I lived in the heart of the city.”

“Well, that’s a coincidence,” I said.

“We can’t delay one more second,” she said, her face flushed.

“Stick to the protocol.” Shay looked unimpressed. “It would be a shame to come all this way and fuck it up.”

“Do you have a photo of the house where Eloise is being held?” she asked.

Shay brought up a satellite image and showed it to her. Thegray photo was of a vast estate seen from above—a white manor with a lush garden.
