“What do you believe you’ll discover about me?” he asked calmly.

“Cameron, there’s nothing to talk about.”

He sat in the patient’s chair opposite me, acting calm and serious, ready to delve into my psyche.

He leaned forward and I sat back, bracing for the assault.

He began thoughtfully. “Aemon used Eloise to keep Eve imprisoned.”

I sighed. “You should have told me a therapy session would be the cost.”

“How did you kill him?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Just curious.” He brushed invisible fluff off his pristine pants. “In his line of work, he was at great risk. There’d be enemies at his door constantly.”

“I agree.”

“Shay has remained vague.”

“Really? And he’s so damn loyal to you.”

“Need to know basis and all that. No intel passed on is his way of protecting me.”

Which made perfect sense.

Cameron sat back. “What a childhood you had.”

I rolled my eyes. “Here we go.”

“Shall we cut into the wound? Deep and quick. A bit like what you do.”

I clenched my jaw. “You’re referring to the history of my birth?”

“I am.”

I shook my head, refusing to go there as I felt that familiar stab of pain in my heart. “What do you think you know?”

“Your mother was hospitalized for a few weeks.”

I gave a nod.

“She had pre-eclampsia, a complication of pregnancy. High blood pressure.”

“Cause unknown. Though more common in younger mothers.”

“Say the words, Atti.”

“Why are you insisting we discuss this?”

“I’ll share my reasoning.”

I questioned how willing I was to hurtle down this painful hill. It would only lead to a crash and burn of my mental state.

“I can’t do this today, Cameron. Can we reschedule?”

“Let’s say I’m the patient. What do you recommend for a resolution?”
