I arched a brow. “They’ll switch. That the idea?”

“That’s confidential.”

“Of course it is.”

“What about you and Eve?”

“What about us?”

“How will you navigate her history with what you need?”

“I’ve not given it any thought.”

“Then it’s time you should. You two need to talk.”

I glanced at my watch. “I should go.”

“The pain in your heart cannot be reached by me, or you. Only by the woman who deserves to access it.”

“You believe that’s Eve?”

“You’ve risked your very existence for her. Don’t break your own heart all over again by denying yourself the chance to love.”

I swallowed hard. “It would have been easier to pay for the fuel.”

“I’ve spoken with Richard. Chrysalis is yours for the night. The chambers, the dining room, his office—anything you need just let him know.”

“You’ve done more than enough.”

“Mia and I will come to your place and babysit.”

I smirked. “I always thought you secretly hated me.”

“I’ve only hated two men. Now they’re dead.”

“Did you know of Aemon Roper?”

“Only what you told me. But after what he did to Eve and her daughter, he got bumped up to first place. Surprising really, considering his competition was Lance, the fucker who destroyed worlds. Lance carried death around in a cup that was constantly overflowing.”

I got to my feet. “I would say you’re welcome. But they lived by the sword if you know what I mean.”

“And therefore, died by the sword.”

A biblical saying that had always stuck with me. If you lived a life of fuckery, you paid for it.

“I’m the devil who wins ‘Eve’.” I glanced at my inked hand. “Maybe there’s residual faith left over from my catholic youth.”

“In some faiths, the serpent represents evil, death, and sin. But in others, the snake represents love and healing. All a matter of perspective.”

In medicine, entwined snakes represented healing.

I’d never shared the reason why I’d gotten this tattoo with anyone. It was too sacred, too private to delve into that story.

Cameron gestured to my tattoo. “It was never going to be Adam for her. It was always going to be the snake in the tree.”

“Are you callingmea snake?” I forced a smile. “Am I the evil one in this story?”

“You’re capable of it, which makes you that much more powerful. Because you control it.”
