I avoided the question, noticing his pallor. “What do you need?”

Greyson’s eyes showed he was consumed with dread. Something was wrong.

“We have to leave.” He glanced around, seemingly paranoid.

No way was I leaving.

Greyson closed the space between us. “Amelia was taken to the sixth floor by Jewel. Stella saw them going up there and rescued Amelia.”

“Why would Jewel want to speak with Amelia?”

Greyson squeezed his eyes shut with frustration. “Amelia was acting nervous afterwards.”

“What are you saying?”

“She admitted she’d heard a rumor. The submissives were ordered to gather in a chamber. Is the rescue tonight?”

“Did Amelia share this with Jewel?” A cold shiver ran up my spine.

“She wouldn’t.”

“Jewel can’t know!”

Once free the submissives would talk, press charges. It would be the end of Pendulum. The end of her.

“Go,” I ordered. “I’ll meet you at Jake’s. Tell him to get Stella out of here.”

His concern grew. “What about Amelia. You didn’t mention her?”

“We’ll talk later.”

“You’re going to the sixth floor?”

He grabbed my arm, but I shook him off and left him where he stood.

Not looking back, I navigated through the crowd until my harried walk became a sprint.

I entered the private bar reserved for members who were permitted to proceed to the secret floor, glancing to my right at the wine cellar.

I needed to get to Eve.

I reached the bar’s other door that led to the hallway, providing access to the elevator.

The exit was locked.

Fuck!

I banged my shoulder against the door trying to break it open, needing access to that side, feeling desperate to reach Eve—before Jewel did.

Unable to break through the door to the private hall, I hurried back the other way with my heart racing.

Then I saw her.

Eve rushed toward me, breathless. “I was searching for you. They’re gone!”

I was relieved to see her but pained to read her worried expression. Everything was falling apart.

“Maybe we have the wrong room?” I asked, my gut twisting with the thought that Amelia had betrayed us—betrayed Greyson in the worst kind of way.
