That much was obvious from her gloating expression. She was wearing that blue robe with the black death mask by her side, like a sign of what she’d done.

She had sealed their fate.

Amelia was subdued and kneeling beside her with her head down, tears falling.

Studying her now, seeing the way she wouldn’t even look at Greyson, I knew…

Greyson sat in one of the armchairs, with his head in his hands looking worse than forlorn. My gut twisted at his expression—it was one of defeat.

I hoped Jake had at least gotten Stella out.

“What’s going on?” I asked casually.

Greyson wouldn’t look at me, wiping out all doubt for what had happened here. Amelia had betrayed him. The truth spilled into the room before anyone spoke.

I was good at reading micro-expressions. This, Cameron had told me, was a gift and a curse.

Because we always knew the truth before it was spoken.

“Talk to me Greyson.” I moved farther into the room, trying to read each person quickly because lives depended on it.

“Hello, Atticus,” said Jewel smugly. “I hear you covet our submissives.”

I didn’t care what she thought. Her opinion was irrelevant.

“Greyson?” I tried to get his attention again. “What happened in here?”

He was staring at Amelia.

I faced her. “What did you do?”

“I fucked up,” Greyson said, his tone solemn. “It’s all my fault.”

I kept my focus on Amelia and yelled, “Tell me what you did!”

She jolted with fear.

Jewel stepped forward. “Apparently, there was a plot to kidnap our submissives. Amelia prevented that.”

“Have you been working for Jewel all this time?” I asked her.

She swallowed hard, not answering. But she didn’t need to—I could see the guilt dripping off her.

The blood had drained out of her face.

“Amelia,” I closed the space between us. “Whatever they promised you, I will double it.”

She peered up at Jewel as though needing her advice.

“Don’t look at her,” I snapped. “Look at me!”

“I’m going to fucking kill you!” Greyson pushed up out of the chair and bolted toward her.

I cut him off, pressing my hands firmly against his chest and shoving him. “Back off.”

He gripped my arms. “You were right. She seduced me. I’m sorry I doubted you.”

I shoved him back again. “Don’t touch her.”
