“I found it in the garage.” I rested my hand on roof. “Now that my ring is gone, I’ll sell this.”

“It will all work out,” he said, turning back toward the building.

Then I realized… “You’re not coming?”

“I’m not done here yet.”

“You can’t go back in there.”

He gently nudged me into the driver’s seat. “I have to go back for Greyson.”

Honestly, this felt like I was filling my lungs fully for the first time in a month.

Perhaps even for the first time since Jake, Greyson, and I had decided to take this place by storm.

Knowing the women were free now meant everything to us. They were certainly in safe hands, with the best care money could buy.

Eve was out of this place, too. She was heading to Cameron and Mia’s, ready to be permanently reunited with her daughter.

All I had to do was find Greyson, and then I could get the fuck out of Pendulum tonight and find my way back to her.

I returned to the room where I last saw Greyson—dreading what state I’d find him in—but it was empty.

I was struck by a feeling of dread as I stalked the hallways, searching, hoping he’d not caught up with Amelia.

If I came across her, I’d takeEve’s ring back.

Greyson didn’t have a history of violence, but he’d had the look of someone close to the edge. His history set him up for chaos.

It was easy to forget how vast this place was, but I finally found him.

He was in the private library, desperately dragging books off the shelves, seemingly searching the pages for answers.

Watching Greyson spiral made my heart ache. “Hey.”

He didn’t stop flipping through the pages like a madman.

“Greyson!” I tried to get his attention. “Speak to me.”

“It’s here.”

“What is, buddy?”

He looked right through me. “Why.”

“Why what?”

“Why they died.”

I swallowed hard, scanning the room for evidence of blood, or a body.

Had he caught up with Amelia?

Or Jewel.

Dear God, what has he done?

His behavior wasn’t just a result of tonight’s events; it was a gestalt. A phenomenon perceived as a whole, with properties distinct from its individual parts.
