“Eve.” He finally relented and released his grip on my waist. “You have ten minutes with them.”

I pushed off his lap and walked across the room without looking at Lance, glad to leave, feeling the intense stares on my back from everyone curious about what I might discover.

I entered the connecting chamber and found Elle and Rachel huddled on the floor where they had been ordered to sit.

At least we had some alone time.

“Stand,” I said.

I pointed toward the center of the room, and they scurried there like their lives depended on it.

“Listen to me,” I said. “I need you to be honest.”

Elle and Rachel both nodded.

“Why did you speak with Atticus Sinclair?”

“He found us,” said Elle.

“He wanted to know about our training,” added Rachel.

“What did you tell him?” I asked.

“Nothing.” Rachel glanced at her friend for support.

“Give me something I can report to the High Chancellor. I’m sure you understand how serious this is.”

“Why?” asked Elle.

“There’s been a club-wide ban on talking with Jake Carrington, Atticus Sinclair or Greyson Grantchester,” I replied, making it clear.

Elle relented. “Sir asked us about the sixth floor.”

“Atticus?” I felt a jolt of panic that he’d blatantly spoken about it. That floor was even more of a secret than Pendulum itself.

Fearing for them as much as Atticus I said, “Don’t share that with anyone else.”

They swapped surprised glances.

“It’s best you go home for tonight.”

They stared at me, uncertain.

“I’ll explain it to Jewel,” I said. “Run along.”

When they hesitated, I added, “Want me to escort you out?”

I glanced at my watch. We still had five minutes before Lance was to be given his time with them.

“We can’t leave,” said Elle.

“Why not?” I blinked at one and then the other.

Both Rachel and Elle looked scared.

Turning sharply, I saw why.

Lance Merrill stood a few feet away. “Time’s up.”
