“You pretend you want to make that club better. You just want more access.”

I stepped closer. “More access to what, Eve?”

“I’m not having this conversation.”

“Say I own you,” I said fiercely. “Say it.”

“Okay.”

I shook my head to show that wasn’t good enough.

Her lips quivered as though I was the worst man she’d ever met. She glared at me but gave a nod that passed foryes.

“Well done. I’ll hold you to that.”

I stormed back along the hallway, returning to the patient in that solitary room.

Then I got to work, rifling through the medical kit again and bringing over supplies to the bedside.

“Are you allergic to anything?” I asked Ben.

With a shake of his head, he reassured me that these drugs were safe for him.

Gaining his medical history, I ascertained he had high blood pressure, but that was about it. If he became too stressed it couldlead to further complications. I glanced around for a defibrillator. There wasn’t one.

I pulled the surgical gloves on and drew up prophylactic IV Penicillin, to be administered in case an infection loomed. Maybe I could prevent it. I gave him the drug via his IV and observed his tolerance to the medication.

Within half an hour, I’d quite possibly stabilized him.

Eve watched us from close by, her expression morphing from hate for me to respect and then back to hate again. The continuous rotation of emotions on her face proved she was conflicted.

She knew how messed up this was.

“Come here.” I motioned for her to follow me down the hallway toward the bathroom, bringing a pair of surgical gloves with me.

With them on, I fished out my phone from the toilet bowl and set it on the edge of the sink. My smartphone was toast but there was no way I’d leave it behind. I washed it beneath the faucet like I was cleaning radioactive material.

“He looks better already.” Eve leaned against the doorframe. “You did the right thing.”

“Unlike you.” I used a hand towel to dry my phone.

Peeling off the gloves, I threw them in the trash, leaving evidence that I’d been here. Still, it wasn’t like I’d leave Ben without options.

Eve stepped closer. “Tell me you didn’t mean it.”

“Mean what?”

“That you’ll make me beholden to you.”

“I was quite serious.”

“That’s unfair.”

“Now that you’ve put my medical license at risk, I’m gonna leave. If he deteriorates, call 911 immediately. If I see his name in the obituaries, I’ll come for you.”

Her gaze broke from mine.

I closed the gap between us. “What’s your husband’s name?’
