I’d also been “gifted” the opportunity in that cottage to see how he dealt with anyone who pissed him off.

A knock at the door had us both turning in that direction.

“Sir.” It was his butler. “They’re delivering the car.”

Aemon gave a nod and turned to me. “Are you a fan of Ferraris?”

“Absolutely.”

“It’s turquoise, her favorite color. A surprise, but I’ll have it garaged until she deserves it.” He winked.

I forced a smile.

“It’s her consolation prize,” he added.

“For?”

“Eve sees me as controlling, but really I’m protecting her from herself.” He gestured to the bar. “Pour yourself a drink. I’ll be right back.”

He followed the butler out.

I assumed there was a camera. Searching the room would provetricky. I moved closer to his desk, reaching for the file with my name on it. No one would blame me for taking a peek.

“Atticus.” Eve gestured from a side door.

Her flushed face and expressive eyes were a reminder of why I’d come.

“I’m busy.”

“Hurry.”

Curious, I followed her into the adjoining anteroom. The leather couch, central coffee table and vast bookshelves leant an air of authority to the space—in keeping with the power-hungry theme.

She was getting a Ferrari. No doubt a continuous stream of expensive gifts—the sign of a toxic relationship.

It was another reason to feel sorry for her.

“There’s no cameras,” she assured me. “They hold meetings in here.”

“Not so sure I believe that.”

“Now that he’s stepped out, that gives you an excuse to leave.”

“I’m guessing he’s out front.” I met her gaze. “Why does it feel like you set a trap for me, Eve?”

She lowered her head. “I wasn’t expecting him back so soon.”

“Maybe he saw me on the camera and came home early?”

“I turned them off.” Her eyes widened with realization. “Someone told him.”

I needed to make the most of these fading seconds. “Tell me everything you know about Pendulum.”

“It’s a gentlemen’s club.”

I moved closer. “And now the truth.”
