She looked over at him. “The doctor needs to get back to Cedars. I’ll walk him out.”
Eve took my arm as though we were old friends. I couldn’t help but guess this might rile up Aemon’s jealousy.
But she made it look ordinary, even though we’d just been intimate, pointing out the décor here and there like she loved to talk about it. That grand blue vase “had been brought back from Aemon’s travels to Tunisia.”
We exited the mansion. I saw that the only car parked out here was mine.
The new Ferrari had been hidden away so as not to ruin her surprise. My guess was that Aemon tortured her and then won her back with expensive gifts.
Apparently, that worked for her. She was no different to all those other women I’d adored who were bored and looking for adventure. Loving the lifestyle and compromising their sense of right and wrong.
As we strolled across the gravel, I chastised myself for coming here after what I’d learned about the place.
About the man, too.
But the lingering taste of her still excited me.
She wasn’t placed in my life by Pendulum to seduce me, that was easy to ascertain. There was nothing but corruption and jealousy residing in this Beverly Glen mansion.
Aemon certainly didn’t want anyone touching her. If she were mine, I’d be just as possessive.
Her fondness for me could prove useful, though.
I’d memorized her exquisite features and the way her lips pouted, the way her eyes softened when she moved close to me. She looked at me differently, too, proving I had left a lasting impression on her.
Leaning back against my car, I said, “You never answered my question.”
She glanced back at the front door. “Get in.”
“Does he hurt you, Eve?”
“Give up on Pendulum.”
“That’s non-negotiable.”
“I’m trying to help you.”
“Take Ben to the hospital,” I said, making a final plea. “Drive him yourself and don’t come back.”
Take that fucking Ferrari for a spin via the hospital.
She gave a resigned shake of her head. “I’ll leave. Just not now.”
“Why not now?”
Aemon appeared at the front door and strolled toward us. “Dr.Sinclair, you forgot something.” He held up the stethoscope from Eve’s first aid kit.
Either he or one of his men had been in that room with Ben. I hoped they hadn’t mistreated him.
I started to tell him it wasn’t mine, but Eve’s expression told me she wasn’t meant to have a medical kit.
I accepted the stethoscope from Aemon with a nod of thanks and tossed it into the backseat. Anyone with medical knowledge would know this wasn’t a Littmann.
“Perhaps we can have you over for dinner,” he said, his tone warmer. “Is there a Mrs. Sinclair?”
“No.” I avoided glancing at Eve.
“Just your friends, then?” His threat sunk deep. “We’ll have them over for some old-fashioned hospitality.” Aemon turned to go and then added, “One more thing. If you try to ruin Pendulum, we’ll take action.”
