I hesitated and then said, “Can’t discuss it.”

“Why?”

“Puts everyone in harm’s way.”

“That’s unpleasantly vague, Atticus.”

“You’re out,” I said. “No one wants you as part of this deal.”

“I see.”

He was the only one with something major to lose.

“It’s me, Atti. Tell me what happened.”

Why did he have to be so damn stubborn? “Your security is still top-notch?”

He looked amused. “You can’t just share that and not provide any details.”

“What if I told you that knowing increases the risk.” Stepping forward, I added. “I didn’t see anyone guarding you on the way in.”

“That’s how I like it.”

“I need discreet protection for Greyson and Jake.”

He shrugged. “Done.”

Right, throw money at the problem and go from there.

“Who texted you at lunch?” He straightened and walked toward the coffeemaker.

“A friend.” It was kind of true.

He glanced back. “I see.”

That was Cole, putting the pieces together with his usual panache.

He brewed Cole coffee that was poured from a black and gold packet. The aroma of percolating beans filled the room. I breathed them in, savoring the rich scent of luxury.

“My dad wouldn’t approve.” He turned to look at me.

“You didn’t grind the beans fresh?” I relaxed a little, needing the conversation to stay mundane.

“The Stars Align.” Cole raised the packet to show me the name.

He could have had his assistant make us drinks, but that wasn’t his style.

“Cool name.”

“Tell me what’s going on.” He brought over a coffee mug and handed it to me. “Or do you want me to read your mind?”

As if it was that easy. Admitting I’d placed us all at risk. Just come out and say I witnessed a murder, or at least I thought so. I saw nothing, just heard a gun go off. No real evidence. Other than the reaction of one woman. The only other proof I’d been there was my waterlogged phone.

I still had my work phone. Next stop T-Mobile to get a new one. Right after enduring my brain’s dissection by Dr. fucking Cole.

“How’s Mia?” I was obviously procrastinating.

“Good.” He blew the surface of his coffee to cool it. “This is a new flavor. I’ll give you some.”
