“I’d be back at Pendulum in a day or so,” I said. “You could have waited to share this with me then.”

“I needed to handle it now.”

“I’m flattered.” She frowned and I said, “I saw the file. The one on your husband’s desk. Right before I went down on you.”

She stepped closer, bristling. “You need to listen.”

“I’ve heard enough.”

“Atticus, you didn’t see anything.”

“Are you referring to the gunshot?”

“Do you seriously believe you can change an establishment that has been in existence for decades?”

“Unlike you, Eve, I’m not there for a good time.”

“You should never have kissed me.”

I shrugged. “I regret that, too.”

Like having her body pressed against mine wasn’t something I’d thought about ever since. Her delicate perfume was a reminder of our first kiss, and what followed—me tasting her pussy in the most daring way, with the risk cranked high and the passion between us scorching.

But the fun wasover.

“Is that it?” I glared at her. “Or do you have something truthful to say?”

“Arrogance doesn’t look good on you.”

“Let me ask you something. What kind of woman stays with a man like that?”

“How dare you!” she whispered fiercely.

“Let me answer for you. Money.”

“I wonder how many of your colleagues would be shocked to hear what you get up to in your private life.”

“Health professionals are never shocked. We see violence all the time.” I narrowed my gaze. “Take Ben’s trauma via a bullet, for example. Patients like that roll through our ER every day. Saving lives takes up quite a bit of time.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Ben was shot at pointblank range. I know that sound.”

“You don’t—”

“I read it in your face,” I said, feeling empathy she didn’t deserve. “The fear in your eyes.”

“You’re wrong.”

“I spent over an hour stabilizing him. You were fond of Ben. I could tell. Don’t let his death be meaningless.”

“Stop it.”

“Why would your husband want him dead?”

She glanced around. “You have a death wish.”

“You think you can come to my place of work and threaten me?”
