“What?”

“I don’t know, stressed.”

“Everything’s fine.”

Unless you counted having a strikingly beautiful woman threaten you with the fact her hubby was a death wrangler extraordinaire.

I took a few more gulps. “Listen, are you sure you want to return to Pendulum?”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

“The club needs a great deal of work. I know how busy you are.”

He looked curious. “No different to any other purchase we’ve made.”

“Trust me, it’s nothing like the others.”

I’d dabbled in business with him and Jake before. The money always rolled over to new endeavors. But Pendulum was an entirely different animal.

“It’s a two-headed monster.”

“Which we know, right?” He narrowed his gaze. “Something you’re not telling me?”

“It’s a dangerous place.” I studied his reaction. “We know that but—”

“What else did you find out?”

“There’s a bad element.”

“Did they threaten you?”

“If I told you the risks aren’t worth it, would you still want to be there?”

“Didn’t we have a handshake agreement after lunch at the club?” He looked confused. “What’s changed since that meeting?”

Oh, nothing, just me witnessing a murder.

I changed the subject. “Did you have that talk with Amelia?”

“Which one?”

Her origin was Pendulum—a gift that kept on giving from the look of this sappy guy here.

“Did she see anything unusual at Pendulum?” I asked. “Hear of anyone being in harm’s way?”

“I was tactful, obviously. She shared there’s a higher level of play there. But everyone is consenting.”

Probably the kind of scene I was a witness to my first evening. The same night I’d met Eve.

“Hey,” he said. “I should have called. You look tired.”

I shook off the memory and refocused. “Was Amelia specific about what she saw?”

Greyson ran his hand over his five-o’clock stubble. “She was never part of any scene like you’re suggesting.”

“That’s good.”

He came closer. “But that’s not to say other subs aren’t. We have no choice but to move forward, right?”
