“What are we talking about here?”
“Evidence.”
“Of what?”
My origin.“A family secret.”
She rested her head against me. “Protect yourself. I know how private you are.”
“Chloe was sent to seduce me?”
“Yes.”
“Then seduce me.”
Her gaze rose to meet mine, and her eyelids fluttered, pupils dilating. She shuddered as she spoke, revealing just how much I was affecting her. “But we’re just friends.”
I played it off. “I meantpretendto seduce me. I know neither of us feel that way about each other. You’re my best friend’s sister.”
“And that’s why I feel safe around you.”
Great.I’d firmly landed myself in best friend’s sister jail.
This crush, this need, would have to be managed, and there certainly couldn’t be anymore kissing.
I shook off my disappointment. “There are other opportunities out there that are better for you. Other news stations.”
“I’ve gotten close to Jewel. You can use me to learn more about her. About what she is up to.”
“You’re dancing on the edge of the abyss, remember?”
“No, I’m dancing with you.”
“Same thing.” I let out a hiss of frustration.
“I want to come home with you,” she whispered.
“That’s one way to keep you out of trouble.”
She brightened. “We can make it look like I succeeded in getting closer totheGrantchester.”
“That might get a reaction out of Chloe.” I winced. “You have to work with her again, I take it.”
“You have to trust me.”
“Of course, not because I’ve teased you with a story that would launch your career into the stratosphere.”
“I would never betray you.”
“I know,” I replied softly, smiling down at her.
I led Willa off the dance floor and out into the night—whisking her to safety, if only for a night.
It was happening—we were happening—here in Greyson’s home.
In his bedroom.
He had led me in and then turned and waited for me to make the first move. I had, moving closer and standing on my toes to kiss him.
