“Monni…” She paused as her eyes grew big.
“I—think—ummm…”
“What, Natavi? What’s wrong?” I panicked.
“My water broke.”
Chapter5
Natavi
My hospital room was dimly lit. I sunk against the stiff pillows behind me. My body was weak, I felt physically drained from last night’s labor war to get my beautiful big son out of me. Each time I moved, I felt pain but nothing compared to the heavy weight in my chest. I felt overwhelmed with so much love through my sheer exhaustion. It all felt surreal… my baby was here.
I turned my head to look over at him swaddled in a tiny glass bassinet beside my hospital bed. His skin was the color of midnight, his eyes was light brown, almost golden with a head full of dark damp curls. He was too damn perfect; I couldn’t hold back my low sobs and I was too weak to wipe my own tears away.
The door creaked open, and I instantly tensed up. My breath halted when Monni walked in, he stepped in all the way hesitantly. His broad frame froze in the doorway. Monni’s dark orbs landed on the bassinet then his eyes locked onto mine. In his hands he held on tightly to a bouquet of roses. He looked different from the man that was jumped by security in order to be kicked out of the room in the middle of the night.
I didn’t hold that against Monni, he was in the middle of an episode. He wanted to make sure they weren’t hurting me or the baby. So he tried to step in the way of the doctor. Monni was at a loss of control last night and it angered him. I was just happy that they hadn’t locked him up. Right now, he looked lost. He stood by the door with his eyes drifting from me and back to the bassinet.
His chest rose sharply as his lips parted to speak but nothing came out.
“Come in, baby…Relax,” I stated softly.
My bottom lips trembled; I could feel his raw emotions from across the room. Monni staggered forward, and the closer he made it to the bassinet, the more I witnessed him unravel. His knees buckled beneath him, he dropped with a loud thud. Right in front of our son he clutched his chest and bowed his head.
I looked past him and saw Detavio and Octavio, along with the rest of our family. They filed in quietly, their eyes were glued to Monni’s back. I felt disappointment when I didn’t spot my parents along with Angel coming in. I texted everybody over two hours ago after being in labor for four hours.
The room was silent except for the sound of my Monni falling apart. Our family watched from the corner of the room, silent and uncertain on what to do or say. I looked down at Monni, with my own set of fresh hot tears. I saw the fear and happiness all in one from him. His hands shook as he reached for the edge of the bassinet, he held back from touching it like he was too scared.
I wanted to speak and move out of the bed to hold and console him but couldn’t. I felt great relief when Detavio walked up silently behind Monni. He placed his hand on his shoulder then bent down to talk lowly in his ears. Seconds later, Octavio walked up and stood on the other side of Monni. He held his hand out and Monni took it willingly.
The two brothers helped their big brother stand up on wobbly legs. Detavio and Octavio’s hands were at Monni’s back as Detavio spoke in a hushed tone.
“Congratulations, you’re a father now.” Detavio spoke in a gruff tone.
“Congratulations, big bro. Happy for you, and for all of us. Thank you Natavi and Monster for blessing us with?—”
“I’m waiting for Monni to pick a name for him.” I smiled weakly over at Octavio.
I had my own ball of emotions going on inside of me. My parents didn’t approve of Monni. He sat down with them months ago for dinner. He asked my father for my hand in marriage, then dinner went left. My father judged Monni before trying to get to know him. My mother followed suit with her husband.
They told me that if I went through with marrying Monni, they wouldn’t support me. My mother called me all types of fools. She said I was naïve to anything walking with meat between their legs. It broke my heart because after Chedda, I thought our relationship had mended at least halfway since we all started talking more. It didn’t affect Monni, he made it clear that nothing and no one would stand between us.
Our wedding was small and intimate. It was one of the happiest days in my life. Me giving birth to our son sealed the deal, although he came a month earlier. Neosyne was full of life and healthy. He weighed eight pounds and two ounces and was twenty-two inches long. I couldn’t believe that I had a baby; nothing could ruin how good I felt.
Heat licked at my skin as I witnessed Monni’s soulless eyes turn into life. Despite everyone talking amongst each other, Monni looked down at our baby and smiled before he spoke.
“Neosyne…It’s Greek for new beginnings. That’s his name…Neo—syne.” Monni wiped away his tears as he continued to smile crookedly.
“Hold him.” Detavio urged.
“I want to…I’m just?—”
“Scared?” Detavio cut in.
“For the first time in a long time you are scared…When I first found out about Angel being pregnant…I was scared as hell… I wondered how could someone so tainted as I…produce life? Eventually my fear got replaced with excitement…thoughts of the future, me picturing how good I would be as a father…” Detavio’s words trailed off when he noticed that his voice broke from his own emotions.
“I wanted to give my baby something that we all never had…normalcy of life with love included…I was learning the love thing from her; I noticed the love and the way I started to treat her. So, I got positive about all of the possibilities of me being a good father. I started looking up all kinds of things…I searched the web about new time dads…” Detavio paused again to clear his throat.
