Page 59 of Fourteen Years

Caroline stood walking the baby over to Becks and placing him in his mother’s arms.

“I’ve actually gotta go too. I told Mom I’d help her with some baking before tomorrow.” then she was gone in a blonde blur.

“What the fuck was that?” asked Becks, looking at me as the door shut behind our friends.

“Hell if I know?!” I answered.

“Do you think they’re sleeping together?”

“BECKS!”

“You were thinking it.”

Chapter 35

“So, Lexi and Lacey. You go get Becks, the baby, and your mom from the library.” I said, trying to remain calm. I’d spoken to Lucas and Becks about this a couple of weeks ago and they were fine with it. I had both Lacey and Lexi’s permissions too.

As my two girls left, Nat spoke, staring at me worriedly.

“Uncle Trevor, you don’t look so good.”

Lucas barked out a laugh.

“You’ve been married before, man. To her, actually,” he said, shaking his head.

“I know. This is just different.” I defended myself and my nerves. We’d set candles around the living room and when we heard the back door open again, Nat and Lucas disappeared to the kitchen.

“What are you all up to?”

Monica’s voice was suspicious.

“Nothing,” came Becks’ quieter voice.

“I think Trevor got a call from the station.” answered Lucas’ deeper voice. “He just wanted to let you know and I’ll take you guys home.”

I heard Monica sigh and start towards the living room, so I went ahead and got down on one knee, opening the velvet box and looking up as she entered.

She gasped when she turned the corner and saw me, her eyes filling with tears.

“Trevor Connor…” she spoke softly.

“Come here,” I nearly begged. I watched the love of my life come towards me, wearing her leggings and oversized sweatshirt. Smiling at her signature messy bun. I wouldn’t have her any other way and after everything we’d been through to get here, we could get married wearing the clothes on our backs, and I’d be elated.

“What are you doing?” she whispered, still disbelieving as I grabbed her hand.

“I didn’t want that male nurse to find out you lied to him,” I began as she laughed, throwing her head back.

“Monica,” I continued, “I love you more than anything else on this Earth, outside of our daughters,” I got serious now, her eyes meeting mine, “I know fourteen years ago, I fucked up. I was a kid. Hell we both were. That’s no excuse, but I ruined the best thing that ever happened to me.”

“Trevor,” she whispered.

“Hush. You found someone that I will be eternally grateful to, that took care of you and our daughter. You both gave me another little girl to love like my own. You both believed in me and I in no way expect to replace him in their lives or yours. But, if you’d give me the chance to show you what it always should’ve been like with us, I promise I’ll make you the happiest woman alive and take care of you, and those girls forever. Will you marry me…again?”

Monica’s brown eyes were shining through her tears in the living room as her head bobbed in a nod before she managed to say yes.

I slid the ring onto her finger, pushing it down to rest alongside the sapphire one Paul had designed for Lucas and Becks to give her last Christmas that she wore on her middle finger. The oval diamond shone pink up at me beside it.

“Pink?” she asked, wiping her eyes behind her glasses.
