Either way, he must have decided not to make a crack.

“Arrangements have been made,” he said.

It was Nick’s turn to raise an eyebrow.

He didn’t want to press the point either, though.

He knew Morley was being cautious, too.

Still, he couldn’t help asking a follow up.

“Am I going to like these arrangements?” Nick folded his arms. “Or should I just plan to be annoyed for the next few days?”

Morley gave him a flat look. Still, something on his face gave Nick the impression he was really thinking about the question.

“I honestly don’t know.” Morley shoved his hands in his pockets, watching Nick’s face. “I suppose it depends on how keen you are to spend time with your own kind.” Still thinking, the human added, “It’s our new Midnight’s place. They’re putting you there for the next week or so. At least until I.S.F. can requisition you a new place of your own. Right now there’s a pretty big shortage. After what Yi’s followers did to the northern part of the city.”

Nick knew.

He remembered.

He was inside his building with Wynter when those bombs went off.

They’d burned out a good portion of the vampire ghetto above the Cauldron.

Shaking the memory off with a grimace, he followed Morley when the old man started walking towards a dark area by the main house.

Wynter wouldn’t be thrilled they’d be sleeping separately.

Hell,Nickwasn’t thrilled.

But he needed to talk to Wynter, anyway.

Another thing he’d have to find some way to arrange privacy for.

“Wait,” Nick said, remembering something else. “Isn’t your new Midnight female?”

“Yeah. What of it?”

Nick frowned.

Wynter really wasn’t going to like that.

She wasn’t going to like that one bit. Especially if the other vampire had I.S.F. live feeds coming over for dinner twice a week, followed by noisy sex in an adjacent room. Especially if that vamp fully expected Nick to be doing the same, possibly at the same time.

“Get your head in the game, Midnight,” Morley grunted, almost like he heard him. “Solve this thing and everyone will go back to leaving you alone. Well. As much as they ever do, all things considered.”

Nick grunted.

Still, it was hard to keep his sense of humor.

Especially now.

CHAPTER11

THE RAPEY BROS

“Why would they have locked this?”Nick scowled, folding his arms. “Weren’t the squints just here? They must’ve known we’d want to look at the place.”
