“Morley. Definitely tell them the request came from Morley.”
The old man grunted again.
That time, however, he almost smiled.
CHAPTER12
TOO FAMILIAR
“They hadno one on the house,” Charlie said, her voice annoyed. “No one. They didn’t even do a drive-by apparently.”
Morley, who was listening in on the other side of Nick, let out an annoyed sound.
“They’re sending someone now,” Charlie added, raising her voice in a way made Nick think she’d heard Morley’s reaction. “They said they were sending someone, at least. We’ll see how fast they get off their asses and do it. Needless to say, they thought I was being ridiculous. They said to tell the old man he’s reacting ‘like a little bitch,’ and that it’ll ‘take a week for that bloodsucker to even digest everything he already ate.’”
“Jesus,” Nick muttered.
“Yeah,” Charlie said.
“What utter pieces of shit those two are.”
“Well, I did warn you,” Charlie said with a shrug.
“Yeah. You did warn us. And thanks. I owe you one for even talking to them.”
“Youowe me?” She smiled. “I thought this was Morley’s idea?”
Nick grunted, glancing at Morley. “Yeah. Exactly. Morley owes you. Not me.”
Nick’s boss gave him a flat stare, and Nick chuckled, in spite of himself.
“Okay, Charlie,” he said. “Gotta go.”
“See you later, handsome.”
Nick hung up, glancing cursorily at the queue of messages still waiting for him in his headset. He realized he was looking for Wynter’s name and stopped.
She wouldn’t call him.
He’d told Wynternotto call him.
He didn’t want her to call him. It wasn’t safe.
But that longing to talk to her, to connect to her in any way, didn’t much care.
Feeling and then seeing another meaningful stare off his human companion, Nick glanced over at Morley. Noting the dead-eyed look he got in return, he frowned.
“What?”
“Oh, don’t play innocent with me, Midnight. You keep flirting with Charlie like that, you’re going to put that poor girl’s life in danger. I’m surprised you don’t know that.”
Nick laughed in surprise.
“Yeah. Sure.”
“Sure yourself. You’re playing with fire, son.”
Nick restrained the impulse to roll his eyes.
