“My younger brother, Brock, and two half-siblings I don’t know very well. They’re ten and twelve years younger than me and live in Austin. You’ll meet Brock today.”

“Have you had any serious girlfriends?”

Damien shrugged. “A couple.”

“Has Harley told you she’s been engaged before?” Olivia asked.

I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.

“She has. She also told me about the accident.” He looked over at me.

Olivia nodded and looked out the window. “Have you and Harley had sex?”

I cut in. “That’s none of your business, and you’re done.”

Olivia didn’t object.

Damien studied Olivia through the rearview mirror. “Now it’s my turn to ask you a few questions.”

“Okay.” Olivia didn’t sound concerned, but him asking the questions made me nervous.

“You’re twenty-three, is that right?” he asked Olivia.

“Yes.”

“Are you planning to move to Palm Springs when you graduate?”

“Kind of,” Olivia replied.

“What do you mean, kind of?”

“I’ve been talking to an accounting firm in LA, and they said they’d let me work remotely most of the time.”

“So you’ll be commuting?”

“Yes,” Olivia answered.

“Does Harley snore?” he asked.

Olivia grinned. “No, but she talks in her sleep sometimes.”

“Good to know.”

Olivia finally asked the dreaded question. “How did you and Harley meet?”

I groaned and Damien started laughing.

“What?” Olivia asked, leaning forward again.

Damien tried to stop laughing and cleared his throat. “We play city rec volleyball in the same league—on different teams.” He didn’t elaborate.

“Harley takes her volleyball very seriously.” Olivia watched him.

Damien nodded. “Believe me, I know.”

“Spill, Andreasen,” she demanded.

He shook his head. “You’re going to have to ask Harley.”
