CHAPTER ONE
Jacob
As the sun rises, I greet the day with a sense of contentment after sharing an unforgettable night with Anya. It was a moment of raw intimacy, where we bared our souls to each other for the first time. Hearing her say those three little words, "I love you," filled me with a joy that knows no bounds. Yet, beneath that joy, there's a gnawing uncertainty I can't shake.
Packing for our journey back to New Jersey, a bittersweet feeling washes over me. I can't shake the sense that there are still areas of her life she keeps hidden. Despite her assurances of love and a willingness to open up, she remains guarded about her struggles. I long to shoulder some of her burdens, but she brushes me off whenever I ask, insisting they're not a big deal.
Why won't she let me in completely? Does she not trust me enough, or is she protecting me from something darker? My mind races with questions, each one more troubling than the last. I want to break through her walls and prove that I can handle whatever she’s hiding, but every time I try, she retreats further.
Anya's strength is both inspiring and frustrating. I admire her resilience, but it also makes me feel helpless. How can I protect her if she won’t let me see what’s threatening her?
As we prepare to leave, I feel a knot of unease tightening in my chest. I hope that as we move forward together, she'll feel comfortable enough to lean on me, just as I lean on her. But what if she doesn't? What if her secrets drive a wedge between us? The fear of losing her to whatever shadows she's hiding from gnaws at me, turning my thoughts dark and restless.
"Good morning," she greets me with a smile as she walks in, and I envelop her in a warm embrace.
"Good morning beautiful," I respond, causing her to blush.
"Okay, you need to stop with the whole 'good morning beautiful' thing. It's too early for you to make me all flustered and giddy," she protests, squeezing me tightly.
Leaning down, I plant a kiss on her forehead. "I already told you; I will never stop telling you how beautiful you are," I reassure her with a smile.
She gives me a playful nudge with her shoulder, rolling her eyes. "Fine," she says with mock surrender, a grin tugging at her lips. Laughing, I trail behind her into the kitchen. "Are you all ready to go?" I ask.
"Yeah, but I have to admit, I'm absolutely STARVING!" she exclaims dramatically, eliciting another laugh from me.
"Well, we can't have you wasting away to nothing! Let's get some food in you ASAP!" I tease back, feigning concern.
"Seriously, though, I'm beginning to doubt your boyfriend skills if you let your girl starve like this," she retorts, her eyes twinkling mischievously.
I play along, puffing out my chest theatrically. "Excuse me miss, but I'll have you know that I am anexceptionalboyfriend!"
Anya's grin widens, and she raises an eyebrow. "Oh, really? And what about those, what was it...fiveex-girlfriends in the lastfouryears?" she quips.
"What about them?" I reply, keeping the playful tone alive.
Anya shrugs nonchalantly. "Oh, I don't know... seems kind of suspicious to have had so many in such a short time," she teases, her smile growing wider. "I might be starting to think there's something wrong with you!"
"Well, how do you know there wasn't something wrong with them?" I counter.
Anya gives me a side glance. "Hmm, seems unlikely that allfiveof your exes had something wrong with them," she says smiling from ear to ear.
"Oh, you know what!" I exclaim, seizing the opportunity to tickle her. She bursts into laughter as she darts away, and I chase after her. We're both laughing uncontrollably as she runs out the door, with me hot on her heels.
After a few moments of playful pursuit, we finally calmed down and gathered our luggage.
We drive for what seems like forever until my stomach starts rumbling and I look at Anya, who is happily scarfing down the breakfast that I got her earlier.
“What?” she asks with her face stuffed with food and she begins to wipe her mouth.
I let out a small laugh at the sight, “I think I should’ve grabbed something too”.
“Well, that’s your fault” she teases. But then starts digging through the McDonald's bag and smiles. “Well, youdidget me two sandwiches soI guessI can give you the extra one,” she says with a coy smile as she grabs it and hands it to me. “I can’t have my driver go hungry now, can I?” she jests.
I smile slightly, enjoying the banter between us. Then I notice her squirming in her seat. “You okay over there?”.
She smiles sheepishly, "So, uh, I may or may not need to use the restroom," a hint of embarrassment in her voice. I nod and spot a sign for a rest stop at the next exit, taking it immediately.
After parking, we head inside. While she goes to the restroom, I hit the convenience store to grab more food and drinks for us.
