“Morning. I came to help wrangle goats because apparently two strong men can’t manage that themselves.”
“No. You came because you were walking the wrong way out of town and I saved you from ending up lost,” Sawyer said.
“I knew exactly where I was going.”
“Sure you did.”
Normally, Zoe’s friend was just his type. Confident, hot, and a city girl. He felt nothing when he looked at her.
“Nice outfit.” JD took in her pink leggings and black sweater with the words “short but mighty” on the front.
“Thanks.”
“Your niece is a real piece of work,” JD then said to Sawyer.
His friend didn’t smile often, but usually any mention of his family could pull one out.
“She’s one in a million, that kid.”
“Zoe is helping at Petticoat before coming to the fair,” Lil said, shooting JD a look he couldn’t interpret and wasn’t sure he wanted to. “So I was actually going for a walk before meeting up with her.”
“The wrong way,” Sawyer added.
Zoe was helping Mrs. C in her shop. He liked that idea and wasn’t about to decipher why.
“I’m hoping she loves it so much she stays,” Sawyer said.
“Your sister is one of the best interior designers I’ve ever worked with. This town would be lucky to have her here,” Lil said.
“She’s a Duke. Of course she’s good,” Sawyer said.
“Just roll with it,” JD added. “That family thinks everyone in it is better than everyone else.”
“They are,” Sawyer said.
When they reached Potato’s stall, Lil looked in and gave a little squeal as she found the donkey.
“Be careful. She can be mean,” JD warned.
“I spent summers on my uncle’s farm. We had mean donkeys there too.”
“Well, hell,” JD muttered as his donkey walked right up to Lil and nudged her in the belly.
“She doesn’t like men,” Sawyer said. “Did you talk to Zoe at all last night?”
“No.” JD kept his eyes on the donkey. “And I’m not going to. Leave her alone, Sawyer. She’ll tell you when she’s ready. Now go and open the trailer, and we’ll bring the goats.”
Muttering, his friend left.
“You got leading ropes to clip to their collars?” Lil said, leaving his donkey.
“Yeah, this way.” JD headed to the next stall. He then took two leads off hooks outside.
“Can I ask you something, JD?”
“Sure.”
“Is there anything between you and Zoe?”
