“I know they are. I just got off the phone with Sawyer.”
Zoe was tucked around a corner and out of sight, so he might just leave, and she wouldn’t have to see him.
“So where’s your friend?”
“In a box over there.”
Crap.
Chapter15
She straightened, because no way was she going to be bent over a box when JD Hopper came looking for her.
“Hi,” he snapped.
“Hi.”
“I have some measurements for Mrs. C,” he said, looking pissed off, which was totally justified after what she’d said to him last night. She looked over his shoulder but couldn’t see Lil.
“I’m sorry for what I said to you at the Rollaway. I was wrong, and it wasn’t very nice.”
“You were, and it wasn’t.” He glared at her.
“I just said I was sorry, didn’t I?”
“But do you mean it?” His eyes were narrow slits now, and she couldn’t be sure but thought the light was hurting them.
“I don’t say things I don’t mean,” Zoe gritted out between her teeth. “Is something wrong with you?”
“Other than the entire Duke family is sent to try me, I have a headache.”
“My mom’s an angel.”
“The entire Duke family excluding your mom,” he said, still scowling.
“Uncle Asher?—”
“Zoe.” Her name came out as a low growl.
“Take some pills if your head is sore, JD.”
“Gee, now why didn’t I think of that?”
“Do you have pills?” Zoe asked, ignoring his sarcasm.
“Yes, and I already took them. Now take this. It has the measurements for the blackout blinds Mrs. C is making for my room.”
Zoe took it and looked over the measurements. She knew the windows these would hang at because she’d slept in that room.
“You’re actually ordering something from here and not a high-end establishment in a big city?”
He sighed and then closed his eyes briefly. JD Hopper was good to look at, even hurting and surly. Black ink snaked under his shirt and down his exposed arms. Arms she’d traced her fingers over.
“Sorry, and okay, I’ll make sure Mrs. C gets the order. In fact, I will write in her curtain ordering book now.”
His lips twitched. “No computer, I’m guessing?”
Zoe shook her head.
