“Nothing is going on between your boss and me. I could never be with a man that spent more on his night cream than I do,” Zoe said, hoping Nina bought her story.

“Well, if you want my advice, you and he would be good together.”

“What? You can’t be serious, Nina.”

“He’s hot, so are you, and there are definitely sparks between you.”

“No sparks. Never,” Zoe said. “I don’t want to discuss this anymore. He’s my brother’s best friend, and we have that Duke pact.”

“Oh, for pity’s sake.” Nina put her hands on her hips and glared at Zoe. “That was when you were teenagers. Surely it doesn’t still apply?”

“It’s for life,” Zoe said.

“Well, if you want my opinion?—”

“Which I don’t.”

“I think you should have a few hot sweaty nights with JD and then tell me everything. Now come on.”

The thought of having hot sweaty nights with JD Hopper made her uncomfortable, because while they might deny that night was everything they’d thought it was, Zoe knew better. Sex with that man had rocked her world.

“Not happening,” she said to Nina as they headed back inside.

Excellent, Zoe. Now you just have to be a woman of strong convictions. She had a terrible feeling that was easier said than done.

Chapter19

He’d wanted to pull Zoe into his car and drive out of the Circle Left parking lot. Drive and not look back to where her brothers and his were.

JD’s life, which had been exactly where he’d thought it should be, wasn’t anymore. There was Zoe and now Henry and his father.

“Hey, you doing okay, shithead?”

Sawyer was the first to approach him when he walked back inside.

“Yeah, assface, all good here.”

“I made sure your brother was staying here, but he already is. I didn’t think you’d want him in that four-bedroom house you have.”

“Where is Henry?”

“At the bar.” He followed his outstretched arm and found his brother standing beside a line of others drinking shots.

“How many has he had?”

“Too many is my guess if he’s not a big drinker,” Sawyer said.

“He wasn’t when last I saw him.”

“Well then, he’s probably well gone.”

“Hey, JD.”

Sawyer lifted his arm as Birdie arrived, and she stepped into his side. The longing he felt in that moment to do the same with Zoe was a terrifying thing.

“Where have you been?” Sawyer’s eyes went over JD’s shoulder, and he knew the man was looking at his sister because he could feel her close.

“JD and I were making out in the parking lot,” she said.
