JD had been raised to respect his elders, so he simply waited instead of giving in to his first thought, which had been driving home and making his own coffee. Seeing as he had a new machine, it would probably taste as good as the one he was about to get.
“Do you feel like there is anything missing in your life, JD?” Klaus said from somewhere inside the caravan.
“Ah… pardon?”
The man reappeared with a steaming cup of coffee, which he handed to JD. He took it and inhaled the aroma. After his first mouthful, he sighed.
Zoe had sighed a lot last night as he had his hands and mouth on her.
Fuck.
“Is your life complete, JD?” Klaus asked, leaning out the window with his own cup in a large wrinkled hand.
“How many of those do you drink in a day?” JD asked, hoping to derail the man from his questioning. “Because if you chat to everyone over a cup, I’m guessing over five.”
“Plenty, and I sleep like a baby.” Klaus smiled, revealing straight white teeth that he swore were his own, but JD wasn’t convinced. “Now, back to my question.”
“Is my life complete?”
Klaus nodded.
“It’s pretty damned good if I’m honest, Mr. Becker… Klaus.”
“You’ll get used to the name, JD.”
“I guess I will, but it’s gonna take time.”
“So, nothing is missing?” Klaus persisted.
“Not that I’m aware of,” he lied. “Did you find something I lost?”
The man smiled at that.
“It’s a funny thing finding your life mate, JD. They’re rarely who you thought they’d be or where you thought you’d find them.”
There was no way Klaus could know what he and Zoe got up to, but the hairs on JD’s arms rose at the man’s words. Another vision of her flashed through his mind. This time as he’d found her this morning, lying naked on his bedroom floor.
“In fact, they are just suddenly there, inside your head, when before they weren’t.”
Zoe had been inside his head for years, but he wasn’t admitting to that, or that she could ever be anything more to him than a single night of hot, amazing sex.
“I’m not really a life mate kind of guy,” JD said.
Klaus shook his head. “It’s sad to hear you say that when I know you’re a man with a well of compassion and love.”
“How do you know that?”
Klaus pointed to his eyes. “I see things, son. I know what people are capable of.”
JD suddenly felt exposed and wasn’t sure why. Klaus didn’t know what he’d done last night with Zoe Duke. He also didn’t know that the woman had been lodged inside his head since he’d met her. He had a really bad feeling that after last night, getting her out would not prove easy either, because unless she left for good, he’d see her and be reminded constantly of the best sex of his life.
Chapter4
“Okay,” he said and then took another mouthful of coffee because he needed the hit of caffeine to steady him.
“Don’t look at women or men, whichever is the case, with blinders on, JD. You never know what direction your life partner is coming from,” Klaus continued.
“Women, and okay,” he said again, wondering why the neck of his T-shirt felt like it was choking him. “Do I look like I need a life partner, then?”
