“Sorry. Tell me the rest of the story.”
“This is actually the good part,” Zoe said, smiling. “I walked round the desk. He was smiling, thinking he’d won. Leaning into him, I kneed him hard between the legs and then walked out and never returned.”
“What’s his name?”
“Not happening.”
“Name, Zoe.”
“You asked, and I told you. Now I expect you to respect my wishes that no one else knows about this. I mean it, JD. I’m trusting you here.”
“His employees should know, Zoe.”
“I’m sure some of them probably do. But the thing is, JD, it’s actually a really great place to work. I told Lil what happened too, just not his name.”
“Clearly he hit on you because you’re beautiful.”
“There were far more beautiful women than me?—”
“I doubt that.”
“Thank you. That’s a nice thing to say.”
“And the truth.”
“You don’t know the other women I worked with.”
“But I know you” came the deep, steady reply.
“Anyway, I think because I was a small-town girl, he thought he could take advantage of me. But you’re right, what worries me is that he may do it to someone else.”
“Lawyer up and go after him, Zoe. Chances are he’ll want to settle out of court.”
“I thought about that, but what will that do to help his next victim if he settled?
“Is there anyone high up you trust in the company?” JD added.
“Yes.”
“When you’ve put things in place, call them and talk about it. It’s the right thing to do, Zoe. I can help if you need it.”
“Thanks.”
“Your family has enough money to go after this guy,” he added.
“I know, and I’ll think about it. Thanks for listening, JD.”
“Welcome, but I seriously think you should tell your family, Zoe.”
“Maybe, but right now, let’s see if we can get this beautiful boy to his new home. Move to the left now, JD.”
He did as she asked. The horse eyed him but didn’t back away.
“Roman, meet JD. He’s going to be your new daddy and feed you all kinds of dehydrated treats.”
“Hey, buddy.” He slowly raised a hand and stroked the horse’s muzzle.
“Nice work. Now we’re going to clip on the lead rope, JD.”
