I thanked him quietly, tipped him all the cash I had on me, and got out.

I had been in a daze on the ride over, and though I’d had some time to think, I still wasn’t any better.

Kai said he spent most of his day here.

A lot of his work was done on a computer, but he said he rarely ever stayed at home.

I didn’t know why, and I didn’t ask. I was just glad I knew where he was because my heart was hurting, and I needed him.

Just him.

I entered the bar, and it seemed like all eyes went to me.

I didn’t know where to look. I didn’t know how to search for him.

There were just so many faces, and pretty soon, they blended in with one another in a big, blurred vision.

I blinked, but it wasn’t working.

Fuck.

My chest pushed in and out in harsh pants. I was panicking. I was—

“Gemma, girl. What are you doing here? Does Kai know you’re coming?”

I blinked at the voice, and his face came into focus.

Dominic.

He looked at me strangely.

I was sure I looked strange as well.

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.

I shook my head, my bottom lip trembling.

“Shh,” he said softly. I hadn’t realized the president of the King’s Men could be so soft. “I got you. I’ll take you to Kai, all right?”

I could only nod.

He pulled me into his arms and led me away from the door.

The way he held me almost felt… paternal.

It made me miss my dad, though I tried not to let that affect me.

We moved to the back of the bar. Everyone watched us, but no one dared get in front of him or stop him.

Dominic led me to a door in the back. He knocked once before he opened it. And there Kai was, sitting behind a desk, his computer in front of him.

He looked up. “Dad?”

Then his eyes found mine, and he stood.

“Gemma. What’s wrong?”

It was getting harder to contain my emotions.
