Not when all the fucking blood was rushing to my ears, and not when I couldn’t think straight.
Because we weren’t looking at Aleksei’s face right now.
We were looking at Jude’s face.
I turned around to Dad.
“Kai—”
I fucking lost it.

GEMMA
A sudden loudand tortured roar from the office made me jump in my seat.
I met Emmy’s wide eyes before turning back to the office.
“What was that?” she asked.
I didn’t answer her.
I stood up from my chair and headed to the office. I recognized the voice.
I picked up speed when there was another roar.
It was Kai.
And he was…
I didn’t know what was happening, but he sounded like he was in pain.
I opened the door as a chair was thrown against the wall near it.
I took in the scene before me.
The couch was flipped, the pictures on the wall were on the floor, and Kai was in the middle of the room, his chest heaving. Dominic was trying to approach Kai, but it didn’t seem like he could get to him.
“Gemma, get the fuck out of here!” Dominic ordered. “Wildcat, bring Gemma with you and stay out of the room.”
Emmy grabbed my forearm, her hazel eyes set in fear and panic.
“Come on, Gemma. Let’s go before we get hurt. Dominic’s got Kai.”
No, he didn’t.
Kai let out another tortured noise, piercing my heart.
I pulled away from her and walked into the room.
“Gemma, no!” Dominic shouted.
He tried to intercept me, but he was on the other side of the room. I was closer to Kai.
I held out a trembling hand and slowly touched Kai’s back.
He turned toward me with a growl, and I worked hard to keep my ground.
