Now it was his turn to frown. “Says who?”

“Me!”

His face relaxed, and he placed both hands on the handrail on either side of me. I looked left, then right, before turning back to him. I tilted my head back to meet his eyes.

Trapped.

I should feel scared.

I wasn’t.

“And I suppose you have authority over my thoughts and feelings,” he said.

I had nothing to say about that, so I said nothing.

He lowered his head further. My eyes widened when I caught on to his intent. I freaked out and pushed at his chest.

He must have been surprised because he gave way easily. I moved away and looked at him.

“You’re toying with me.”

It shouldn’t fucking hurt.

This wasn’t anything new. But the fact that it was coming from Kai—

Tears stung my eyes. He shook his head. “Gemma—”

I turned away and walked off the deck. I did not want to hear what he had to say.

I moved aimlessly through the backyard, trying to find a side door that would lead me out of there. I didn’t know how I was going to get home since Blue drove, but I would figure that out once I was away from Kai.

Footsteps sounded behind me, and I picked up my pace.

Why couldn’t he just leave me alone now?

Was he having fun?

“Gemma!” he called, his voice too close for comfort.

I ran a little faster.

I didn’t know where I was going, but the fact that I was stumbling around in the dark did not help me control my emotions.

I—

I cried out when I felt arms snaking around me.

I was gently pushed up against a tree. I didn’t even realize the tree was there, which said where my mind was.

He cupped my cheek. “I’m not toying with you, pretty girl.”

His words were soft. I didn’t think I had ever heard him speak so softly before. My bottom lip trembled, and I shook my head as a single tear fell and touched his hand.

He made a tortured noise in the back of his throat before he slammed his lips against mine.

I let out a small whimper that I couldn’t be sure was in protest or…

Or something else entirely different.
