I kept my eyes open.
We were in the middle of springtime in California, so it wasn’t too cold, but there was a slight chill in the air from the ride.
I couldn’t bring myself to care, even as goose bumps formed over my exposed arms.
I kept hold of his solid form in front of me. We came to a stoplight, and I pressed my face against the middle of his back, trying to get my bearings.
A part of me still couldn’t believe this was happening.
Perhaps I was asleep, and this was a dream.
Then I felt him press his hand against mine that was on his middle, sending me reeling back to reality before the light turned green, and he took off once more.
We arrived shortly after.
I looked up at the luxurious building, a little surprised.
Kai’s apartment building was nothing like I expected, though it made sense.
From what Blue said, the club was doing really well, and that was only counting the legitimate side of the business.
I hopped off the bike and stood to the side, waiting as he shut off the engine and hopped off.
He came up to me right away, wrapped his arms around my waist, and—as if he couldn’t help himself—gave me another quick, but no less intense kiss.
When he stepped back, I was breathing hard, and there was a notable tingle along my skin where he touched me. He wrapped his hand around mine and led me up to the apartment.
“Text Blue and tell him you won’t be home tonight,” he said.
I took a deep breath. I was spending the night with him.
What would that mean?
And was I ready?
I didn’t know, but I automatically pulled out my phone, trying not to think too much about what might or might not be happening.
“Do I tell him… about us—you?”
“You can tell him whatever you’re comfortable telling him,” he said.
I nodded and texted Blue.
Gemma:I’m with Kai. I’m fine but I won’t be home tonight. Don’t worry about me and I’ll tell you everything tomorrow.
Blue texted back right away.
Blue:Are you safe?
Gemma:Yes, I’m fine. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.
Blue:Call me if you need anything, Okay?
Gemma:You got it. I love you.
Blue:Love ya too, baby girl.
I smiled and shoved the phone back into my pocket. Kai had been watching me the whole time.
