She looked fucking terrified that I would ask her about her family.
They might be the reason she’d called Blue and asked for help. And I wasn’t fucking surprised, considering what a dickhead William Gallagher was.
She took a long sip of her coffee. “Why do you ask?”
“Just curious,” I answered mildly.
“I don’t want to talk about them.”
“Why?”
She shot me a hard look. “Do you want to talk about your family? The King’s Men?”
“That’s different.”
“How so?”
“If you’ve heard of the King’s Men, then you’ve also heard of all the rumors circulating around the city. Let me put your curiosity to rest. Half of the rumors you’ve heard are true.”
She sucked in a sharp breath, and fuck me, I didn’t mean to sound so rough. But fuck, she should know this topic was off limits, considering she was close with Blue, and I was sure he didn’t tell her shit. That was the unspoken rule of the club. You didn’t talk about club business with outsiders.
“I already know,” she said after a moment.
I looked at her.
“I worked for Uncle William when he was mayor. He hated you guys.”
I laughed.
That wasn’t a fucking surprise.
“The feeling was fucking mutual.”
She frowned at me. “Don’t sound so curt with me. I was just saying what it was. And if you regretted sleeping with me because of my family… well, then, you should have thought about that before you took me home with you.”
She let out a huff of annoyance and stood. She was about to walk away when I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her onto my lap.
She struggled a bit, and I firmed my hold.
I ran my lips against the soft skin of her cheek. She stilled, her chest pushing in and out in angry pants.
“I’m sorry, pretty girl. I didn’t mean it. I’m a bastard.”
“Well, yeah, youareone,” she said, making me laugh.
She looked up at me with those fascinating brown eyes of hers, the hurt clearly reflected in them and making my heart clench.
I dropped a quick kiss on her lips, feeling her soften against me. I could spend all day kissing this girl in my arms.
“I don’t regret last night,” I said against her lips. Her breath hitched, and it felt like a sucker punch to the gut. “Of course, I don’t. Forgive me?”
She didn’t say anything for a second. Then, “We’ll see.”
I smiled and kissed her again.
“I don’t like to talk about my family,” she said when I pulled away.
She played mindlessly with the collar of my shirt.
