“This happened during my last week with him. He was mad because he would be going to jail soon. It was shortly after the news broke that someone anonymously sent evidence of his crimes to the press, and he couldn’t get out of it.”

I looked away from Kai again, but I was sure he had caught my expression.

“It was the King’s Men,” he said.

I nodded. I knew more than that. I knew Kai was the one who broke into Uncle William’s office.

“I was the one who found the evidence,” he said slowly. I hesitated before I slowly nodded. “You knew it was me all along?”

“I saw you on the camera feed loitering around the office, trying to find a way in.”

He frowned. “I shut off all the security cameras that night.”

“But not the night before, when you were doing surveillance.”

His eyes widened. “You knew I was going to sneak into his office to grab the information?”

I nodded. “I figured it out when the camera stopped working one night.”

“And you didn’t report it? Or stop it?”

I licked my lips. “Why do you think the office door was unlocked?”

“Fuck me. Did he know of your involvement in all this?”

I nodded. “That’s why he was so mad. It was also when I realized I couldn’t keep working for him. Not that it would have mattered, considering he was going away for a really long time. He pushed me onto the desk. That’s where the bump came from. My head hit the edge. Not hard enough to knock me out, thank God. But hard enough to leave a permanent scar. I thought he was going to kill me that day.”

I shivered, and Kai tightened his arms around me.

I reveled in the comfort of his arms.

“The police came by,” I said. “We saw them on the camera, and while he was trying to think of an escape, I ran out. No one paid me any attention when I left.”

“Fuck, baby. I’m so sorry.”

I shook my head. “I don’t regret it. I don’t regret protecting you.”

And that was what it was. The first time I saw him on the camera feed, I was completely smitten. Despite the grainy quality of the video, he was, hands down, the most beautiful man I had ever seen in my life. My heart had come to life, and it was the start of my obsession with the heir of the King’s Men MC.

I was glad I’d protected him.

He had been young then. Twenty-two or -three. And though there was only a two-year difference between then and now, I hoped he had learned more after being in the club and was more careful. I didn’t want anything to happen to him.

I ran my hand over his jaw.

He moved his face closer to me, and my heart skipped two beats.

“I’m sorry for overreacting,” I said.

“Oh, no, you don’t. You don’t apologize for that.”

His voice was fierce, and I would have thought he was mad at me had I not known better.

“Then I’m sorry about the mess.”

He shook his head. “I’ll take care of it.”

My tears were dry now, but my eyes still hurt—a telltale sign I’d been crying.
