“Shh. Do you hear that?” I asked.

“Hear what?” he whispered.

Fuck, perhaps it was just my imagination.

I shook my head and took one step forward, when a flash of silver caught my eyes.

I didn’t fucking know how I knew, but I did.

“Watch out!” I screamed as Jude pushed me onto the ground. The gun fired, the sound loud in the alley. In the distance, I thought I heard someone scream.

Then another shot, and pain like I had never felt exploded in my side. I gasped and pushed Jude off me, looking up. A shadow of a man loomed over us.

He aimed the gun at me.

This was it.

I was gonna fucking die.

Fuck.

I closed my eyes.

“Hey! Get the fuck away from them!” a familiar voice shouted.

Thank fuck. I recognized the voice.

Roman was here.

The man looked at where the voice was coming from and pointed his gun. He fired a few shots, then cursed softly under his breath.

I didn’t know how long the fight lasted,

It felt like a fucking eternity.

My eyes moved over to Jude.

Fuck. Everything hurt, and I had lost some blood.

My mouth opened, but nothing came out.

Beside me, Jude met my eyes.

“Kai,” he said.

I tried to call out to him. I couldn’t. I fucking couldn’t.

The man came back into view.

He stood over my body for a beat before he turned around and went over to Jude.

I watched in horror as he bent down and picked up Jude’s now-lifeless body.

I tried to call out to him.

Jude.

My voice wasn’t working.
