He stood there for a moment and watched the closed door.
He couldn’t see me because of the tinted window, but I could see him, and there was something tormented in his expression that I didn’t know what to make of.
He closed his eyes briefly before making his way to the driver’s side.
And to think tonight had gone well.
We were silent on the ride home.
I sat as far away from Micah as possible and felt his eyes on me whenever he wasn’t looking out to the road.
As soon as he put the car into park, I opened the door and climbed out.
“Lainey—”
I shut the door on his words.
I didn’t want him to say anything to me right now, because I was on the verge of breaking down.
I blinked, trying to contain the tears and the hurt as I waited by the front door for him to unlock it.
I still didn’t have a key to the house.
How could I be so naïve?
So stupid?
Micah walked up to me quietly. “Lainey—”
“Please open the door.”
He didn’t say anything for a moment, and then he unlocked the door. I pushed through, and he followed closely behind me, shutting the door and locking it.
I was about to walk to the room when he grabbed my arms and pulled me into his body.
I struggled against him.
“No! Let me go, you son of a bitch. I don’t want to talk to you.”
“Well, tough,” he replied, turning me around and pushing me up against the wall.
I glared up at him. “What do you want?”
He pressed both hands down against the wall by my head and leaned in close to me. “To talk?”
I crossed my arms over my chest. “Then talk.”
He let out a deep breath. “I’m not used to talking with anyone about my decisions, save for Dominic, but even that is rare. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to worry about anything when there is nothing to be worried about.”
“Nothing to be worried about? Tell me, what kind of fight will this be?”
He looked away from me, and I nodded my head, already guessing. “To the death?”
“Lainey…”
My bottom lip trembled, and I shoved at his chest. He didn’t move. “And you think this doesn’t involve me? You’re the one who bulldozed your way into my life. You made me like this… this person who doesn’t belong to me anymore. Fuck you, Micah. You made me love you, and now you’re participating in a cage fight without telling me about it? What the hell am I supposed to do if you die?”
I screamed out the last part and slammed both fists down on his chest.
