But I wondered if I would want this to be something more than that with her. I didn’t know.

Fuck, but I just wanted a taste of her lips once more.

I leaned closer, my hand moving down to her neck and feeling her pulse jumping.

A little more.

She didn’t move away.

I gently brushed my lips against hers in the softest kiss.

Her breath stuttered before she fully opened her eyes and took me in. Then she placed her hands on my chest and pushed me away.

I didn’t even get the chance to speak before she was off the couch and inside the bathroom, slamming the door behind her.

I stayed where I was for a moment.

Fuck, but what just happened?

I leftfor the bar after dinner, leaving Lainey locked at my place.

I might have trusted her not to run away because of her grandma, but that didn’t mean I trusted her to not do anything stupid.

I could have stayed back at the house with her, but there was just something about staying in that place with her and not knowing what to do that made my fucking skin crawl.

Jesus fucking Christ, I was feeling as indecisive and as unsure as a teenage girl.

I shook my head and sat down at one of the tables in the back.

Ever since everyone had found their women, they had stopped coming to this bar.

I flagged down the waitress for a beer and took in the scene. Most of the customers were brothers from the club.

Some acknowledged me, but something about my face must have given away my bad mood because all of them stayed away from me.

The waitress came by and dropped off my drink. I took a large sip of my beer and set it down just as the doors to the bar opened, and Roman walked in, Ryleigh tucked into his side.

They hadn’t noticed me yet, and I didn’t plan on making myself known. It was obvious he was taking her out on a date.

I took that to mean she was no longer mad at him, considering the girl was back to looking up at Roman like he hung the stars and the moon.

I wondered what that was like.

To have someone look at you as if you could do no wrong.

I was sure Lainey would stab me in my sleep first before she would ever look at me like that.

I smiled a little at the thought while Roman led Ryleigh to the bar, clearing out a seat for her. He spoke to the bartender, then pressed a lingering kiss on her temple before he turned and looked directly at me.

I would have looked down on him had he not known I was there.

One of the first things I taught him when we first started living on the street was to always be aware of his surroundings.

He walked over and took a seat directly across from me.
