Hell.

Why was I feeling like this all of a sudden?

Micah grabbed my menu and closed it, along with his. “Yes, two sirloins. One rare and one medium-well. Both with a side of mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables.”

He handed the menus to Gary, and I let out a small sigh of relief.

Gary nodded, grabbed the menu, and walked away.

I could feel Micah’s eyes back on me.

What he must think of me, not even knowing how to order at a restaurant.

Or hell, to be this old and still not know how to do a lot of the basic life things that kids younger than me had already done.

Twenty was not old compared to his thirty-seven, but I felt absolutely ancient then.

Micah opened his mouth, looking like he would say something to me, but the last thing I needed was his pity.

“Don’t you have to work today?” I asked him before he could say anything.

The look he shot me told me he knew what I was doing. “No. I took the day off.”

“Can you do that?” I asked, surprised. I thought being the club’s enforcer meant he was busier than the other members, trying to enforce the rules and wreak havoc in the lives of innocent people.

“Why wouldn’t I?” he asked mildly.

As usual, I didn’t know what he was thinking based on his expression.

I shrugged. “I don’t know. It just seems like with what you do, you’ll always be extra busy, is all.”

“Slow season.”

I blinked and turned to him fully. “Did you… did you just make a joke?”

His silver eyes danced as he looked at me.

I shook my head and took a small drink of the water. Then a bigger one.

I hadn’t realized how draining riding in the back of a bike was, but I liked it.

“What do you do exactly?” I asked when I put the water down.

“What do you think I do?”

I ran the tip of my fingers over the edge of the table, not really looking at him. “Hurt people.”

“Do you really want to know, Lainey?”

I startled a little by the sound of my name in his voice. Was this the first time he had said my name?

I couldn’t be sure, and I didn’t know why I was so affected by it.

Before I could answer him, he said, “And make sure you’re prepared for the answer.”

I gulped.

I wasn’t sure I was. I didn’t think I would ever be prepared for the answer he might give me.
