Gary came out with our food then.

“Rare,” Gary said, having guessed that Micah ordered that for himself and placed the plate in front of him. “And medium-well for the lady.”

I smiled a little at him in thanks.

Gary left after that.

My mouth watered at the sight of the food on my plate. I didn’t think I had ever eaten something so lavish before.

Micah unrolled the utensils and handed me a knife and fork before he placed the napkin on my lap.

I stared at the utensils in my hands. In theory, I knew what to do with it, but to hold it, I was…

My cheeks flamed with shame and embarrassment.

Maybe he should have ordered me something easier to eat.

I couldn’t possibly send the food back, and Micah probably wouldn’t take me out to eat again because—

He grabbed the knife from my hand and pulled the plate closer to him, and I watched, a little in horror, a little in fascination, as he cut up the steak for me into small, bite-size pieces. As if I was a child.

I looked around, but no one was paying us any attention, and Micah didn’t seem embarrassed that he had to do this for me.

When he was done, he pushed the plate back in front of me and leaned down until his lips touched my ear. I shivered a little from the contact.

“Eat up. You don’t want the food to get cold.”

I could only nod before I pierced one small piece of the steak and put it in my mouth.

Flavor instantly exploded, and all of my embarrassment, though not gone, went to the back of my mind as hunger took hold.

Oh, wow.

This was delicious.

Easily the best meal I’d ever had.

I took another bite of the steak before I tried the mashed potatoes, closing my eyes.

It took me a moment to realize Micah was quiet next to me, and when I opened my eyes, he was looking at me with a strange look on his face.

I straightened up a little and reached for the napkin, wiping my mouth.

“What? Do I have something on my face?”

He shook his head. “Eat, sweetheart.”

I should have called him out on the nickname. I wasn’t his anything.

Wasn’t I?

I didn’t know anymore.

The only thing that was certain…

Micah confused the hell out of me.
