I tensed, thinking it was going to hit me, but I felt nothing.

Micah retaliated, and a loud clang rang out as the bullet caught on the bike.

The man slowed down, and Micah sped out of there, not looking back.

My heart was still galloping in my chest, feeling like it was trying to move out of my throat.

Fuck.

What just happened?

Were we… gunned down in the streets in the middle of the day?

This couldn’t be happening.

It couldn’t be.

This only happened in the movies, right?

Because despite growing up in a bad neighborhood, I had only seen an unloaded gun once in my life, and that was in Garrett’s room.

I didn’t even know when Micah pulled up to his house and into the garage, but I could not make myself let go of him to climb off.

I would fall down if he tried to pull me away from him.

He turned off the engine, and everything was just so quiet, except for my heartbeat.

It was still loud.

Still too fast, too hard, making my chest hurt.

“Baby, let go. I’m gonna help you in.”

I shook my head, unable to say anything.

I couldn’t, not unless he wanted me to lose it right then and there.

And something told me he didn’t.

I expected him to yell at me. To get frustrated.

But all he did was grab my legs, twist them around his body, and move my hands up so they wrapped around his neck. He quickly maneuvered the helmet off me, throwing it somewhere on the ground. I clung to him tighter when he carefully kicked the leg stand, got off the bike, and made his way inside the house.

I buried my face in his neck and felt him pause slightly before he continued walking.

He shut the door behind him, and I knew I shouldn’t feel safe being back in the place that was essentially my prison, but I did.

Fuck, I did.

I shivered, and my teeth clattered, though I didn’t think it was from the cold.

We were nearing summer, and today was in the high seventies, but I couldn’t seem to make myself stop shivering.

“M-Micah?”

“I got you,” he said, moving over to the couch.

He reached out and pulled me away from his back before sitting down and settling me on his lap.
