Was there trouble?

I moved closer to his body, and though he didn’t look at me again, he wrapped his arm around me and held me by his side, his warmth making me feel marginally better.

We walked to the hospital entrance without another word, Johnny following close behind.

I hadn’t been able to look the man straight in the eyes since I stepped foot out of the car, and it was all Gabriel’s fault—the stupid man.

I was silently cursing him out in my head when we got inside the huge hospital.

I lost my train of thought and took in the place.

Whoa.

I had never been to a hospital this big before, and though it was busy and bustling with life, it was quiet and professional.

Peaceful.

Gabriel didn’t give me a chance to take it all in. He led me further inside, and he seemed to know where he was going because we entered a hall for maternity care.

There were only five other people waiting in the area. Two couples and one woman sitting by herself.

They all looked up as we entered, their eyes focusing on me first before moving to Gabriel, then Johnny, then back to Gabriel and me.

I shifted on my feet, feeling a little uncomfortable from the attention, but Gabriel didn’t seem fazed.

He led me to an empty chair in the corner and gently guided me down before walking to the front desk.

I watched him speak to the older nurse in the front before the woman covered her mouth to contain a small giggle.

That was probably his superpower, making women of all ages turn into goo in his hands.

He came back moments later with some paper for me to sign. He sat down in the chair next to mine, his presence taking up so much of the air around us that I shifted a little in my seat in unease.

“What?” he asked softly.

I shook my head and quickly signed the paperwork, trying hard not to show how awkward I was feeling with his eyes focused so intently on me.

“I have to go to the bathroom,” I said once I finished.

He looked like he was going to say something but changed his mind at the last minute.

He nodded and pointed me in the right direction.

I stood in a daze as I made my way to the empty bathroom.

I locked the door and quickly cleaned myself up as much as I could—better than what he had done.

It made sense now why he hadn’t come inside of me. There would no doubt be a pelvic exam.

Once I felt a little more human again, I walked back out and sat down in my seat.

Gabriel wrapped his arm around me and pulled me in close to him.

I looked around at the other people in the waiting room, catching the eye of the lone woman and wondering how I would have felt if I had to do all of this on my own.

I would probably never admit it, but I was glad I wasn’t.

Barely a minute had passed when a nurse came out for us, even though there were three women ahead of me.
