He grabbed my hand right away.

I didn’t even know why I was nervous, but I was.

He squeezed my hand when the doctor turned to him and introduced herself again.

I barely listened to their conversation.

Another squeeze from Gabriel brought me back to reality.

He leaned down and kissed my temple. “Don’t be nervous.”

I shook my head, about to deny it, but no words came out.

“Gabriel is right, Bianca,” Dr. Rodriguez said. “We’re just doing a simple check-up first before I delve deeper into your family history. This visit can take some time, but it’s pretty routine. Okay?”

I nodded.

She smiled and sat down. “Perfect. First things first. Let’s look at the little baby.”

She placed a blanket on my lap before shifting the gown up and squirting some clear gel on my stomach.

I could feel my heart wanting to lurch out of my throat when she brought the ultrasound stick up close and moved it around.

She looked at the screen in front of her, smiled a little, and turned it toward Gabriel and me.

She pointed at a little circle on the screen.

Gabriel moved closer to me, his arms wrapped around the back of the small bed I was lying on.

I blinked. “Uh… what am I looking at?”

“That,” she said, looking up at me, then at Gabriel, “is your baby.”

I swallowed. “It’s… it’s just a circle.”

She nodded, and Gabriel moved his hand to my shoulder. He soothingly rubbed the skin there, and I resisted the urge to react to such a simple touch.

“Yes,” the doctor said. “The baby is just a cluster of cells right now. This is typically an early visit. We usually don’t see mothers until they’re about six to eight weeks in.”

Which meant she’d made an exception for us.

Because of Gabriel?

I didn’t know, and I didn’t ask.

“I would like you to come back around the eight-week mark to ensure everything is going well.”

I could only nod, my gaze moving back to the circle on the screen.

She pressed something on the computer, and the image froze. After cleaning the gel from my skin, she stood. “I’ll give you both a moment.”

She left, and I placed my hands over my stomach.

I hadn’t felt pregnant, but now…

I wasn’t sure what I was feeling.

I had never thought much about having a kid, only because my life had been so chaotic.
