I shook my head, keeping my expression firm.
He let out a small sigh. “We’re different.”
“How so?”
“This whole thing. Thisparty? It is nothing more than a formality. You belonged to me the moment you stepped foot inside my club, and I couldn’t get you out of my head.”
I shook my head. He was confusing me, and I didn’t know if he was doing that on purpose.
The way he talked sometimes, it was like he wanted me for me and not because of the baby in my stomach. But that wasn’t true, and I would be a fool to fall for it.
He stood up. “Come on, let’s dance.”
It was on the tip of my tongue to refuse him, but all eyes were on us. As much as I hadn’t wanted this marriage in the first place, I was now married. And I didn’t want to publicly defy Gabriel in front of all these men trying so hard to impress him.
The women, too.
But they wanted to impress in a very different way.
I placed my hand in his and let him lead me away from the table.
By the time we got to the dance floor, Kaia and Raphael were nowhere to be seen, and the song had changed to a sensual Spanish song, the melody slow and easy to dance to.
Gabriel led.
I placed my hands on his shoulders, and he wrapped his arms around the small of my back. I was sure this wasn’t the right way to dance to this song but I didn’t care. Most people gave us a wide berth as soon as we stepped onto the dance floor anyway, so it didn’t matter.
I rested my head on his chest, counting his heartbeats and how in time they seemed to be with the beat of the song.
“Are you having fun,mi cariño?”
“Not really.”
“Why not?”
“Too many guests. I wish we had done this with fewer people around. It would feel less like we’re on display and more like we’re actually celebrating something.”
“It doesn’t feel like that now?” he asked softly.
I shook my head.
He didn’t say anything for a moment. “I’m sorry, baby. I wish I could have given you the wedding of your dreams.”
I shrugged. “It is what it is. And besides, it is a beautiful wedding. And I love the daisies.”
“Yeah?” he asked mildly.
“Yeah.”
“Good to know.”
“Do you know everyone here?” I asked because there was no mistaking that most of the guests here were from Gabriel’s side. But I didn’t meet his family. I didn’t even know if he had any of his family here. Was Gabriel as alone in this world as I was?
Would we be each other’s family from now on?
The thought made me both sad and happy at the same time.
I snuggled closer to him.
