How heartbreaking it was to have your brother do that to you just for power.
My husband wasn’t a man who said a lot.
He was a closed-off man, but I could see pain shadowed in the dark irises of his eyes.
He could deny it all he wanted, but he was still affected by his brother’s attempt on his life.
And by killing his brother with his own hands.
He frowned. “Don’t be sad for me,mi tesoro.”
I let out a small exhale. Sadness, or was it pity?
I hadn’t realized how alone he was until now.
It made me want to stay close to his side, and that was such a dangerous thought to have.
“What does that mean?” I asked, changing the subject.
It took him a moment to realize I was asking about the nickname.
“My treasure,” he answered.
There was no hesitation in his voice.
“Is that what I am?”
He wrapped his arms around me. I rested my head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat as he reached around and did up my top.
He didn’t pull away, and neither did I.
His lips touched my ear when he said softly, “You, my little darling wife, are my most cherished treasure of all. Invaluable. Irreplaceable. And how hard I would fight to keep you by my side.”
I shivered.
He made it sound like he wanted more than the baby inside me.
But that couldn’t be it… could it?
I pulled away first.
He cupped my cheek and looked me in the eye, his expression unreadable, before he shot me a smile and helped me up. “Come on. Let’s cool off.”
He picked me up in his arms.
But he didn’t throw me in the water like I expected him to.
He walked slowly down the steps, deeper into the cool water.
He let me go when we got to the middle, his eyes glinting mischievously before he splashed me with water.
I widened my eyes. “Why would you do that?”
He laughed. “Don’t you know how to play in the water, baby?”
I blinked. The last time I had really played in the water was when I was little… with Lucinda.
He splashed me again.
